Long serving chairman steps down (12/2/19)

Gippsland Rotary Centenary House’s hard-working and long-serving Chairman, Ken Peake OAM, has stepped down from his role and as a committee member after fifteen years at the helm. At its meeting on Wednesday 6th February, the Committee of Management accepted Ken’s resignation with regret and wished him all the best for the future.

Mr Peake was the original and only Chairman of the organisation which was inaugurated in 2004 by the Latrobe Valley Group of Rotary Clubs to initiate a community project that would mark the Centenary of Rotary in 2005. He played a pivotal role in getting the project off the ground and the establishment of the first stage which was opened in September 2006 at a cost of almost $2 million. HIs advocacy, negotiations with governments, public servants, Rotary clubs and Philanthropic trusts resulted in him being responsible for the lion’s share of the funding required including a remarkable $432,500 raised from trusts as a result of his detailed submissions and follow up calls.

Subsequently, he was at the forefront of planning and fundraising for stage 2, which was opened in November, 2012, adding a further nine family rooms to meet the growing demand for accommodation required by patients and families  attending The Gippsland Cancer Care Centre and the Latrobe Regional Hospital.

In 2009, Ken Peake was awarded the medal of the Order of Australia for his commitment and hard work for Centenary House. He had been previously recognised by the Rotary movement with a Paul Harris Fellowship Sapphire pin in recognition of his achievements

As demand for accommodation continued to grow, Ken saw the need for a third stage and set about planning this several years ago. This culminated in the announcement last year by the then prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull of a $900,000 grant to enable the third stage to proceed. Mr Turnbull was eloquent in his praise of Centenary House after his inspection and his sentiments have been borne out by many politicians at both State and Federal level as well as many Rotary leaders who have praised Ken Peake’s efforts.

However, the many years of negotiation, dealing with governments and bureaucracy have taken their toll and Ken has decided he no longer needs the pressure for the sake of his health and the opportunity to spend more time with his grand children.

A new Chair is yet to be appointed by the Committee of Management but experienced member David Swainsbury has been elected as interim Chair while a process of review and recruitment takes place.
